ALL ABOARD ! for a fantastic ride and get ready to step back in time at the Sydney Tramway Museum located in Sutherland NSW
For a century, trams were an important part of everyday life in Sydney, taking people to work, school, the beaches, the footy and cricket, the races, the “pictures” and even the Royal Easter Show. Wouldn’t it be great to wind back the clock to the days when a fleet of 1,400 trams – more than twice as many as Melbourne has today – ran along 180 miles (about 290km) of routes?
You can… at the Sydney Tramway Museum! Jump on a Bondi toast-rack tram, or a corridor tram from the 1930s. In our Display Hall, see the unique prison tram used for transport between Long Bay Gaol and Darlinghurst Court House for more than 40 years.
The Sydney Tramway Museum provides a nostalgic and educational insight into the lifestyle of Sydney sider during the 100 year period of tramway operation from 1861 to 1961, with running and restoration works-in-progress, exhibits and photos depicting the development and operation of tramways during this period.

The Museum is nestled in the southern Sydney suburb of Loftus, which adjoins the beautiful and expansive Royal National Park. It is easily reached either by car or train:
The Museum is easily reached by travelling south from Sutherland on Rawson Avenue, formerly the Princes Highway. Be sure to travel along Rawson Avenue, not the Sutherland bypass. The adjoining map points out that there is no right turn from the bypass.
The Museum buildings can be seen on the right just before Rawson Avenue joins the bypass. There is limited parking in Pitt Street; other parking is available along Rawson Avenue itself.
The Museum is located adjacent to the Illawarra line to the south of Sydney. Catch a Waterfall service and alight at Loftus, one stop past the junction at Sutherland. You may also catch a Cronulla service but change at Sutherland for the Waterfall train. CityRail’s suburban services provide a half-hour service to Loftus during the day. The journey takes about 35 minutes from the city. The Museum is right next to Loftus station and the main entrance is just a short 75 metre walk from the station.
